Education - Introduction
The Center for Creative Photography Education Department offers a variety of free public programs, print study, tours, and educator's resources to help people understand, appreciate, and gain new perspectives on photography through our collections and our changing exhibitions.
Programs and Events: Gallery talks, lectures, symposia, opening receptions, and films are presented in conjunction with changing exhibitions. Programs and events for our current exhibitions are arranged by the Education Department and are free and open to the public.
Print Study: Individuals, groups, and classes (kindergarten through university-level) may visit the print study room to see photographs from the Center’s collection of more than 80,000 photographs. Education staff assist with the selection of images by suggesting photographers, techniques, approaches to particular subjects, and various possibilities for integrated learning.*
Tours of Current Exhibitions: Exhibitions, which change approximately every three months, offer a rare, firsthand look at a variety of contemporary and historical work. Guided tours of exhibitions are arranged through Curator of Education, Cass Fey. In addition, teachers are encouraged to take part in our Educator-as-Docent program. This training program for Southern Arizona educators prepares them to guide their students through changing exhibitions at the Center and to develop materials tailored for their individual curricular needs. Educators may choose to guide their classes through exhibitions or accompany and partner with a Center guide. Printed educational materials include exhibition guides with overviews, themes to explore, questions for discussion, and models for interpreting photographic images. At training sessions in the galleries educators walk through exhibitions with the Curator of Education to practice suggested techniques and to stimulate connections among the art of photography, curricula, and the imagination. *
Groups can make appointments for exhibition tours or PrintViewings.
